The Purse Podcast interview (#135): Jem Stein
Who they are:
Jem Stein is the founder of Daring Capital, an impact investor group supporting purpose-driven founders, especially women and minorities, who aim to make the world a better place. Before this, he founded The Bike Project, a social enterprise that gives bicycles to refugees, growing it to £2.5 million in annual revenue.
What they did:
In 2023, Jem set up Daring Capital to solve a big problem: many founders with brilliant ideas to help communities can’t get funding because they don’t fit into the traditional venture capital or loan systems. Daring Capital has already raised over £1.5 million to support these founders, with over 90% of funds going to female founder businesses.
Jem focuses on gender lens investing, a growing approach that backs women-led businesses and addresses gender gaps. This also reflects the values of women investors, who increasingly want their money to have a positive impact. Research shows that 85% of female investors prefer investing in businesses that make a difference, like social and environmental initiatives. Jem’s simple and transparent process, combined with his belief in fairness, is creating opportunities for female founders to thrive.
Key takeaway:
Jem Stein’s work shows that investing with purpose can create real change. By focusing on supporting underrepresented founders, especially women, Daring Capital is helping to level the playing field. This approach proves that impact investing doesn’t just benefit communities—it also aligns with the values of modern investors, especially women and millennials, who are driving the shift towards more meaningful investments.
